North-Going Zax

Today was the last day of this crazy week, with everyone all over place. To prove it was crazy, Coach had to make a color-coated spreadsheet to make it through. Some people were practicing at DeSmet as part of their day off school, while others were at Day 2 of Parkway North, and a couple of guys ran on their own because they had prom activities.

Now here is a recap of both days of the meet. The meet was kicked off on Thursday with the 4x1600. I lead off with a 4 second PR and broke 4:30 for the first time running 4:29. I passed the baton to OC who followed up with an impressive 4:58. It was a big drop from earlier in the season and it looks like he is near top form after offseason surgery. Goetz then took over and ran a PR of 5:08. Stack got the baton in 3rd place and was determined to change that. He ran 4:43 and brought the home the silver medal for the relay team. Next was the Junior Senior combo of Higgins and Ed O in the 800. Ed, following the theme of the meet, came through in a 5second PR of 2:23 closely followed by Drew who also ran a 5 second PR with a 2:25. To finish to first day, freshmen Michael Callahan and Collin Vieth ran the 3200.

Friday, the 2nd day, began with the JV 4x800 followed by the Varsity 4x800. In the Varsity race Boyle PRed in 2:06, Scherping ran a season best 2:05, Gibson PRed in 2:03, and Potter brought home 4th place. Next was the 1600 with Jack and Bob. Potter stayed around to run the Open 800 which he ran faster than he ran earlier in the day coming in at 2:03. And the last race of the meet was probably the best. Jacob and Matt OC ran a race I wish I would have seen; they said it was a thing of beauty. Alternating laps and going out under control, they ran a very smart race which led to PRs for both of them. Jacob edged Matt by a step as they both finished in 10:35.

Title: It comes from the Dr. Seuss book The Sneetches and Other Stories. In this book, there is the story titled “The Zax.” Since it was the Parkway North Meet, the co-main character North-going Zax grabbed the title.
