Escape to Creve Coeur Lake

The team finally reunites for a nice run at Creve Coeur Lake. It was great to get away from campus, and many runners made positive comments about practice’s location.

The highlight of Practice might have been the celebrity appearance. The great T-Time came around for the first time all season. It was quite unexpected and very exciting.

It was a calm, simple long run with not a whole lot going on. Boyle, OC, and I ran a couple loops around the park taking in the nice scenery. We were joined by Potter and Stack for parts of it.

Best Dressed: Abernathy and Boyle. 3 to 7 Business Days had finally arrived and the wait was well worth it. In the greatest coordinated dressing of the season, these two guys matched to a T. They showed they’re veteran experience wearing the exact same shorts and shirt. Did I mention that the shorts were brand new and designed after the Ireland Flag? Yes, pure awesome, and they are both part Irish so they can do that. The matching two years past XC Meet Day Shirt finished it off. Check back soon to see a picture of this great look.

North-Going Zax

Today was the last day of this crazy week, with everyone all over place. To prove it was crazy, Coach had to make a color-coated spreadsheet to make it through. Some people were practicing at DeSmet as part of their day off school, while others were at Day 2 of Parkway North, and a couple of guys ran on their own because they had prom activities.

Now here is a recap of both days of the meet. The meet was kicked off on Thursday with the 4x1600. I lead off with a 4 second PR and broke 4:30 for the first time running 4:29. I passed the baton to OC who followed up with an impressive 4:58. It was a big drop from earlier in the season and it looks like he is near top form after offseason surgery. Goetz then took over and ran a PR of 5:08. Stack got the baton in 3rd place and was determined to change that. He ran 4:43 and brought the home the silver medal for the relay team. Next was the Junior Senior combo of Higgins and Ed O in the 800. Ed, following the theme of the meet, came through in a 5second PR of 2:23 closely followed by Drew who also ran a 5 second PR with a 2:25. To finish to first day, freshmen Michael Callahan and Collin Vieth ran the 3200.

Friday, the 2nd day, began with the JV 4x800 followed by the Varsity 4x800. In the Varsity race Boyle PRed in 2:06, Scherping ran a season best 2:05, Gibson PRed in 2:03, and Potter brought home 4th place. Next was the 1600 with Jack and Bob. Potter stayed around to run the Open 800 which he ran faster than he ran earlier in the day coming in at 2:03. And the last race of the meet was probably the best. Jacob and Matt OC ran a race I wish I would have seen; they said it was a thing of beauty. Alternating laps and going out under control, they ran a very smart race which led to PRs for both of them. Jacob edged Matt by a step as they both finished in 10:35.

Title: It comes from the Dr. Seuss book The Sneetches and Other Stories. In this book, there is the story titled “The Zax.” Since it was the Parkway North Meet, the co-main character North-going Zax grabbed the title.

Happy Earth Day

With a lot of the team away at day one of the Parkway North meet the team felt pretty small as we started today. However despite the lower numbers the coaching pair did not pulling any punches when it came to the pre run speech… it was marvelous.

Being Earth day I took it upon my self to raise awareness for today. If one would find themselves waiting for a bus on olive, walking down olive, or in the subway on Olive today one would have been made aware of Earth Day by a pleasant man wearing a tie dye shirt doing his part for Earth Day. Needless to say this man is a real man for others.

Best Dressed: Boyle. He looked the part today to aid in his raising Earth Day awareness with a tie-dye, peace sign shirt. It was a great look that definitely fit perfectly into the holiday.

Splash!

Continuing the week of everyone doing different stuff, today was probably the craziest day. Some people were at a meet, others were running 400s, and still others were doing AE runs. The highlight of the run was that there was actually water. Unlike yesterday, Coach Leeman left the water out for all the runners.

A recap of the Webster JV Meet:
The meet began with the 4 x 8 team featuring three freshmen and a sophomore, Frazzetta, Piatchek, LaFever, and Reed, started the meet with a strong #6 place finish. Next, was a heated competition in the 1600 Meter between M. Smith, M. Beers, and myself with each of us PRing by at least 8 seconds. J. Waller, S. Hamilton, and J. Potter, who PRed by 12 seconds, all ran solid races in the 800 meter. Finally, came the exciting 3200 Meter with C. Sullivan, M. Hillmer, and P. Callahan. Everyone listened to Coach’s advice, competed hard, and ran extremely well.

G.McGann

Today, OC turned 18. Yes, 18; he can now legally be tried as an adult. A solid pack of guys sang "Happy Birthday" to him while on the way to Conway. The only thing to top this birthday gift was the surprise that Boyle came up with to celebrate the big day. To enact his plan, we dumped the water on him in true Gatorade fashion, even getting him with some ice. The grin on his face afterwards was great. It really made for a cool birthday.

Quote of the Day: "Walk with me"- Boyle before telling me the plan. He is always scheming.

"Real" Blog Post

The shirts have arrived! Today we saw that latest Desmet fashion trend in action. The brand new winter training shirts not only are stylish and fly but very XC as well. Those that can be seen sporting these shirts were the ones putting in the miles this winter and you will notice how several of the top guys rock these new treads. Make sure you younger guys put in the miles this summer for the summer training shirt!

Today the group was split again with the majority of guys doing a long run. For us on the track we had an awesome workout. But before the workout could begin there were some “real” strides to be done. These “real” strides compared to regular strides were excellent in warming us up and getting us in gear for a great workout. Highlights during the run included a guest appearance by Lance Armstrong.

Best Dressed Award: Jack Husmann wins today’s award with a very simple yet stylish shorts with a stripe matching the shirt. Additionally we would like to point out that Jack is now the proud owner of a pair of running shorts, something that some members of the team have yet to figure out. Soccer, basketball, LAX, Gym shorts ≠ running shorts. For more information on this topic please ask coach to explain the down side of running in boxers.

Split Squad

With multiple meets this week, the team was split into two different groups. The guys racing on Friday had a long run plus core. The guys running on Wednesday or Thursday had a speed workout. This workout combined tempo and race pace. It worked on running race pace when you’re tired.

The highlight of today’s practice was the highly anticipated arrival of the winter training shirts. Rob appeared with the goods as the workout was winding down. The shirts turned out awesome; they were so good that Rob wished he would have made one for himself. Congratulations to everyone who worked hard and earned the shirt. Remember WEAR your new shirt tomorrow and bring your FIVE DOLLARS. We will be taking a winter training shirt picture tomorrow, and you don’t want to miss out.

Quote of the Day: “Drink water or eat an apple”- Coach Traughber talking about how we need to focus on making ourselves better, not on other people’s times.

Joke of the Day: “And COD”- Coach Leeman in the backgroung while Coach Traughber was listing things to do to get better.

Best Dressed: OC. He proved that he knows what it takes to match clothes. His red shorts not only matched his red headband but also the letters on his shirt. That shirt being last year’s winter training shirt which added a nice out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new element to his look. I’d also like to give Mackenzie S an honorable mention for his all Nike look.
